Yin Yoga

Finding Happiness Through Pain

Seriously?

Indeed, there is a saying, life is not all about expecting the calmness after the storm, rather we should learn to dance with the storm, to find happiness through pain. This philosophy meant to tell us how to convert our thought pattern to survive when we cannot do anything to change our situation. However, this philosophy is not suitable in teaching or practicing Yin yoga.

The source of pain is pressure, both physical and psychological. As long as we can find a way to let the pressure go, the pain will disappear.

The aim of Yin yoga is to enlarge the space of your body through stretching in order to let the energy (Qi) and nutrients (Blood) flow freely. By doing so, we heal your body. The philosophy of Yin yoga is not to experience pain, but to learn letting it go.

When you are staying in one pose, stretching, try to focus on your breath and feel the body parts which is being stretched. The reason you can feel it is that the energy has reached that point (feeling is a signal which is a form of energy that is generated by stimulus and then responded by the brain). Right now, what you need to do is to let it go, just to follow your body in to a position that you feel comfortable. When you are comfortable, you can breathe and relax; when you can breathe and relax, the energy can flow through your energy pathways (meridians in Chinese medicine term) leading nutrients to heal you. However, if you push yourself too far to show others or yourself that you can do a certain pose or simply look for pain, your body will be uncomfortable which only results in nervousness and tiredness, or even worse, body damage.

The previous way, by letting it go, you can feel and heal your body with enjoyment and calmness; the other way, by pushing it, the pain will damage and exhaust you.

The different between these two ways is your choice. You are just practicing Yin yoga, believe me, you can choose your own way. It is definitely not the situation that the universe throws at you which you have no choice but to accept and learn to “dance with the storm”.
